About Table Tennis
"A little brandy for your Gossima Sir?"
Table tennis, originated in Victorian England, where it was played among the upper-class as an after-dinner parlor game. It has been suggested that makeshift versions of the game were developed by British military officers in India around the 1860s or 1870s, who brought it back with them. A row of books stood up along the center of the table as a net, two more books served as rackets and were used to continuously hit a golf-ball.
Though Table Tennis evolved, along with Badminton and Lawn Tennis, from the ancient game of Tennis (also known as "Jeu de Paume", "Real Tennis", "Court Tennis" or "Royal Tennis"), the game was further developed after Lawn Tennis became popular in the 1880s.
also known as "ping-pong" or "whiff-whaff", but don't be surprised if you get a frown from a table tennis player if you refer to their sport by either of these last two terms!
